The primary reason for the partition was the rise of anti-British sentiments in Bengal. It was becoming difficult for the Britishers to control India from a far off state in the east like Bengal. So Bengal was divided based on religion separating Hindu and Muslim dominated areas, but the reason was that it was too large to administer appropriately.
