My experience as a science teacher for the past five years has been defined by my commitment to inquiry-based learning. My goal is to move beyond textbook definitions and help students understand the scientific method as a tool for discovery. For instance, in my 8th-grade physical science class, instead of just lecturing on the principles of buoyancy, I designed a hands-on lab. Students were given various objects, containers of water, and a few simple tools. Their task was to figure out why some objects float and others sink, and then design and build a small boat that could hold as many pennies as possible. This project required them to hypothesize, experiment, collect data, and analyze their results. The classroom became a hub of active learning, with students debating, problem-solving, and collaborating. I also believe in connecting science to real-world applications. When we studied genetics, I had students research and present on a genetic disorder, but they had to use a creative medium—a podcast, a short film, or a comic strip—to explain the science behind it. This not only solidified their understanding of the topic but also honed their communication and presentation skills. My greatest reward is seeing a student's face light up when they successfully complete an experiment or make a connection between a scientific concept and something they see in their daily lives."
