Ask a Question
Nitrogen exists as a dinitrogen molecule (N2) in the atmosphere which is not readily usable by the plants. Therefore, it is required to convert it to Ammonia (NH3) so that plants may utilize it. Plants, such as Legumes contain nitrogen-fixing bacteria (e.g. Rhizobium) in their root nodules which share a symbiotic relationship with the plant, deriving nutrition from the plant and in return providing it with ammonia. Some free nitrogen bacteria are also present in the soil (e.g. Azotobacter).
The reaction which occurs is as follows:
N2 + 8H+ + 8e− + 16 ATP → 2NH3 + H2 + 16ADP + 16 Pi

Nitrogen exists as a dinitrogen molecule (N2) in the atmosphere which is inert and not readily usable by the plants. Therefore, it is required to convert it to ammonia (NH3) that ionizes to Ammonium (NH4+), the functional form for plants.
