In the first few years of the 20th-century population of Bengal rose to 75 million and included present-day West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Bangladesh and Odisha. It was tough to administer such a large area. So the partition has been proposed even before Curzon had arrived in India.
The next most important reason is that by doing partition based on religion, they want to undermine India's growing nationalism.
Finally, I would say that the chief aim of such partition was only to create a rift between the two communities and hamper the unity and nationalism in the country. The immediate impact was the birth of the Muslim league in 1906.
