Learn Art and Science of Carnatic Classical Music

Time theory is followed strictly only Hindustani classical. In Karnatak music they are not so strict and are allowed to morning ragas like bhouli in the evening concerts. Yes by following time theory we lose our wealth of ragas. Morning midnight afternoon ragas are all lost.

Hi Deepti, Are you concerned about present music education or music performances/recitals ? I shall answer both ways as per my knowledge and experience. Yes, at concerts time theory is still being followed. You may attend concerts and find that almost every artists presents Raga according to the time of performance. About music education, it is not being followed however students are informed about the time theory and specific time for each and every raga. Your point is valid that by following this theory we might loose some of the ragas i.e. late night or early morning or probably the afternoon ragas too. As most if the concerts happen in late evening and only few festivals are whole night or at any other time. But Artists do not perform only at concerts, they also release albums and certainly they have option to consider the odd time ragas in their albums. read less

We can't say that much sure that we do not follow time theory but in concerts we start with suitable raagas for the evening or morning schedules. In Temple, the oduvars are still following the pann murai based on the time theory only. It is still existing only.

Or the time of the day...

I believe ragas can be sung at any time, I have practised Multani and Yaman in the morning, and air bhairav and Bibhas in the evening. I don't believe it distorted my presentation of the raga... Or the time of the day affected my singing. Having said so, when ragas were alloted to a particular prahar of the day by our learned gurus, there was a science to it. But finally music is subjective and persons! read less
