Most of the elements in the periodic table try to get stability by obtaining the nearest inert gas configuration. So, They should get octet electronic configuration in the outermost shell (octet rule- 8 electrons in the outermost shell).
To get octet, configuration elements may lose or gain electrons.
By Losing or gaining the electrons an element form, a new species is known as an ion.
Ions are two types. 1. Positive ion ( cation) is formed by losing electrons
Examples: Na+, K+ , Ca+2 , Al+3 etc
2. Negative ion ( anion) is formed by gaining electrons
Examples: Cl- , F- , O-2, N-3 etc
