Carnatic music is so called because it is the music that's pleasant to hear.In Sanskrit Karna means Ear. That which is pleasing to the ear is called Karnataka sangeetam. But nothing to do with the southern states of India though it's prevalent in South Indian states, AP, Karnataka, Tamilnaduand Kerala.
