As a Teaching Assistant in a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school in London, I gained valuable experience supporting pupils who required additional time, encouragement, and personalised approaches to learning. My primary responsibility was to assist slow learners in developing their academic, communication, social, and independent-learning skills within a supportive classroom environment. I worked closely with teachers to adapt learning activities according to individual pupils’ abilities and learning needs. I provided one-to-one and small-group support in areas such as literacy, numeracy, reading, writing, and basic comprehension. I broke complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps and used repetition, visual resources, practical activities, and simple instructions to help pupils understand and retain new concepts. I also supported pupils who found it difficult to concentrate or complete classroom tasks independently. I encouraged them through positive reinforcement, patience, and consistent guidance, while allowing them sufficient time to process information and respond. I monitored their progress and shared observations with teachers to help identify areas where further support was required. An important part of my role was promoting pupils’ confidence, independence, and positive behaviour. I encouraged learners to participate in classroom activities, communicate their needs, interact appropriately with peers, and gradually complete tasks with less adult assistance. This experience strengthened my understanding of differentiated teaching and the importance of creating an inclusive, calm, and structured learning environment. It also developed my patience, empathy, communication skills, and ability to recognise and respond effectively to the individual needs of slow learners.
