Any word and its meaning can be learnt from its etymology. Here living means anything having life. The definition of life and to be alive is to interact biologically with its environment. In biology, it can be explained as if there is life. It can respire, undergo metabolism, grow. There is evident growth in both biological and physical form. For example plants growth starts with a seed; it takes the help of soil, nutrients, water, sunlight (environment) and grows into a seedling than to a plant. Same in the case of animals. Among microbial, which include fungi, algae etc. viruses are nonliving by themselves. Still, when they attack a living cell, they use the living cell to grow divide itself and then burst out of that cell to attack other living cells.
