What is an Election? An election is a process where people vote to choose their leaders or representatives. It is how citizens of a country or state participate in deciding who will make decisions for them. Why Do We Have Elections? To ensure people have a say in how the government works. To select leaders who represent the wishes of the majority. To change or re-elect leaders based on their performance. Types of Elections: 1. General Elections: Held to elect members of parliament or the central government. 2. State Elections: Held to choose leaders for a specific state or region. 3. Local Elections: For selecting representatives like mayors, city council members, or panchayat leaders. 4. By-Elections: Conducted if a seat becomes vacant due to resignation or death of a leader. Who Can Vote? In most countries, citizens aged 18 and above can vote. Voters need to register their names on the voter list. Everyone gets one vote, making it fair and equal. How Does Voting Work? Voters go to a polling station on election day. They vote using an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) or ballot paper. The candidate with the most votes wins. Important Terms to Know: Candidate: A person who stands in an election. Political Party: A group of people with common ideas who support candidates. Voter ID: An identification card issued to voters for verification. Constituency: A specific area from which people elect their representative.
