Hirak Jyoti Das

Hirak Jyoti Das is a distinguished artist of the present generation in Indian classical music. Born in 1998 at Patbausi, Barpeta (Assam), he hails from a culturally enriched family. His father, Saroj Kumar Das, is a reputed teacher, and his mother is Manjula Deka Das.
His musical journey began under the guidance of Guru Dilip Kumar Sharma. After completing his matriculation, he enrolled at the renowned Jayakrishna Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Barpeta, where he received formal training in classical music under Guru Pradip Kumar Mishra. He earned the prestigious Sangeet Visharad diploma from both Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai, and Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth, Lucknow.
He completed his higher secondary education at Ambedkar Academy, Barpeta, and later pursued higher studies in Guwahati. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Indian Classical Music from the State College of Music under Gauhati University. During this period, he became a disciple of eminent violinist and classical guru Pandit Bidyut Kumar Mishra, receiving systematic training in the traditional gharana style. He further completed Sangeet Nipun from Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth.
For advanced studies, he moved to Kolkata and earned his Master’s degree in Classical Music from the University of Calcutta. Simultaneously, he completed Visharad in Harmonium from Nikhil Bharat Sangeet Samiti, Kolkata.
Hirak Jyoti Das has actively participated in several national conferences and has performed alongside many renowned classical artists. He has accompanied eminent musicians such as Devapriya Adhikari, Nagesh Athgaonkar, Vidushi Mitali Bhowmik, Anirban Dasgupta, Dr. Bilambita Banisudha, and Vidushi Dr. Taposhi Ghosh (Agra Gharana) in various cities including Kolkata and Bardhaman.
His deep interest in harmonium led him to receive advanced training under Pandit Shubhendu Banerjee (Gaya Gharana), which significantly shaped his artistry in solo harmonium performance.
On 4th September 2025, he was awarded B-Grade in Harmonium (Classical Instrumental) by the Central Audition Board of All India Radio, New Delhi. Notably, he is the first and only Assamese artist to receive recognition as a Solo Harmonium Artist from this prestigious board.
Currently, he serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Music at Assam down town University. Alongside vocal classical music, he specializes in solo harmonium performance and trains students in both solo playing and accompaniment techniques in raga-based music.
Through his dedication and creative vision, Hirak Jyoti Das continues to contribute significantly to the promotion and preservation of Indian classical music in Assam, especially in establishing the harmonium as a respected solo instrument. His journey stands as an inspiration for aspiring musicians.
