It depends on what's your goal towards your career. If you're looking for a job in programming itself, then it's best if your start is focussing on programming from now itself. If it's only for current curriculum purpose, even then excel, knowledge won't go waste as almost every career path will require you to interact with the computer and excel files at some point. So, it's better to invest time in it either way.
