"What is a history painting? Must it depict a historical scene?" in   Art and Creativity/Painting

Derived from the Italian word "istoria" (narrative), the term 'history painting' refers to any picture with a high-minded or heroic narrative (message) as illustrated by the exemplary deeds of its figures. Originally dominated by religious paintings, the category expanded during the Italian Renaissance to include works depicting themes from mythology, literature, or history, typically executed in a large-scale format. For the world's greatest exponents of this type of art, see: Best History Painters. Leon Battista Alberti identifies istoria with the representation of the exemplary deeds and struggles of moral figures Scrovegni Chapel frescoes Giotto Betrayal of Christ Lamentation of Christ La Primavera highly complex mythological paintings Leonardo Da Vinci whose decaying masterpiece The Last Supper Michelangelo sharpened history painting further with his fresco 'Creation of Adam' in the Sistine Chapel Raphael the third Renaissance genius, consistently produced inspirational history painting Albrecht Altdorfer is a combination of history painting and landscape.

"What are the qualities needed for a good painting teacher?" in   Art and Creativity/Painting

Art teachers who instruct at a community setting may not need to have any formal education in the field and are required instead to demonstrate their understanding of various art mediums, their own talent to create and their ability to teach skills to others. Art teachers who serve at a college or university setting typically hold a graduate degree of some type, usually a Master of Fine Arts. Art teachers at public and private schools serving students from kindergarten through grade 12 usually have a bachelor's degree in art or fine arts with an emphasis in education. Professional artists may be able to substitute extensive experience for a degree, but still may be required to complete some education training that may include classes such as child psychology, teaching methods, classroom management and the foundations of education. *Knowledge of art history and different art genres in order to teach a range of art styles. *Ability to communicate concrete and abstract concepts to students *Ability to spot and cultivate creativity

"Who are the greatest portrait artists?" in   Art and Creativity/Painting

The foremost artist of the Dutch Baroque and probably the greatest ever portrait painter in the history of art, Rembrandt was the most sensitive and perceptive painter of the human face - the gateway to the soul - while his complete mastery of shadow and light lent his portraits an added drama - even super-reality. It is this combination of profound humanity and master craftsman which lifts him above the other great portraitists, into a class of his own. The Mona Lisa may be the finest individual portrait, but Rembrandt in my view is unquestionably the greatest portrait painter. Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)

"Who are the finest still life painters?" in   Art and Creativity/Painting

Zurbaran is perhaps better known for his austere religious painting of dead saints and live monks, but he was also one of the greatest still life artists. Although few in number and painted strictly in the Spanish tradition, his still life paintings have a timeless quality and a flawless simplicity. Typically, they feature three or four objects in a row, which stand out strongly before a darkened background. Most of the items are chosen for their symbolic value: Zurbaran's pictures tend to contain subtle religious symbolism relating (eg) to the Virgin Mary, the Passion of Christ and other Biblical references. Studying the objects he painted, one might say they have an almost religious quality, as if they were objects of veneration. Totally exquisite. Famous Paintings by Zurbaran - Still Life with Lemons, Oranges & Rose (1630s) oil, Norton Simon Museum - Still Life, oil on canvas (1630s) Prado Museum, Madrid - Still Life with Oranges & Lemons (1630s) oil, Fondazione Contini-Bonacossi - Still Life with Pottery Jars (1630s) oil on canvas, Prado Museum, Madrid
