GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test.

The computer adaptive exam, GMAT is meant for students aiming to pursue MBA or masters program (especially in finance, accounts and commerce stream) in business schools (B-schools) .

Around two-thirds of the 1,900+ B-schools globally consider the GMAT scores for admission purpose. A numerical count suggests around 2100 colleges and their 5000+ graduate courses count GMAT score as selection criteria, for over 60 years now. The GMAT exam is conducted in over 112 countries across the globe.

Present statistics show that the GMAT exam is conducted over 20000 times in an academic year.

Colleges and institutions rely on the GMAT score to judge the classroom capabilities, critical reasoning, reading, writing and mathematical abilities of a candidate.

GMAT is also referred to as GMAT CAT, which stands for GMAT Computer Adaptive Test.

The GMAT exam is conducted in both paper and computerized format. The computerized version is more popular, while the paper one is still continued only in few remote locations of North America.

Conducted in standard English, the GMAT exam assesses a student’s eligibility through four sections.

The Integrated Reasoning (IR) section of GMAT exam was introduced in the curriculum since June 5, 2012.

The score of AWA and IR is not summed in the final GMAT score.

The total duration to complete one GMAT test is three and half hours. Including breaks this extends up to four hours to complete one session of GMAT test.

To crack the GMAT exam, one needs to have a knowledge of communicative and literature English, maths, algebra, geometry, rational reasoning abilities and problem solving approaches.

The GMAT exam is owned and administered by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the global non-profit Council of Business Schools. GMAT is a registered trademark of GMAC.

The initial nomenclature for GMAT exam was The Admission Test for Graduate Study in Business. The renaming to GMAT happened in 1976.

Students in plan to pursue Executive MBA, can now opt for GMAC introduced Mini GMAT Executive Assessment exam. GMAC especially designs this for EMBA aspirants and the test is of shorter duration and only assess the analytical and logical thinking of the applicant.

The GMAT test exam can be scheduled at any point of the year, However in case of applying for GMAT re-test, a gap of 31 days needs to be maintained.

In 2017, the GMAT exam is available in 600 test centers over 114 cities across the globe.

The GMAT test can be taken maximum up to 5 times in an academic year.

GMAT Application Procedure

Steps to Register for GMAT:

  • Visit
  • Click the tab on the top right - ‘Take the GMAT Exam’ and register with all the required information such as your personal details, educational details, your choice of B-Schools, Career goals, etc.
  • Once you are registered, go to the GMAT Exam Scheduling Section.
  • Select the option – Schedule a GMAT Appointment and then Find a Test Center to choose your Test Location. Once done, you will receive an option to choose 3 Test Centers.
  • Once you choose the respective Test centre, you can see the dates and the time slot available to book your Test.
  • Once you select the date, you need to make a payment of USD 25 to finish the Registration Procedure for GMAT.
  • Apart from Online Registration, you can also register your Test through email, fax or Phone.
