My answer is going to be inclined to yes for your question, but as you know, exception and exceptional student are always there.
Finding a teacher and learning under him/her is only the first and most important step you have to take, wanted to be a playback singer huh not smooth it's even tricky without learning Hindustani classical for 98% of students as I have said the exception is always there.
Learning traditional develops your voice, from giving the heavy bass like Papon to going in the high range like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the skills like voice modulation.
There is so many Voice culture in Indian singing forms. It gets developed when learning dhrupad over actual practice (a Hindustani classical).
At last, I would say go for it man, do not think, even exceptional students get so much of benefit learning these beautiful forms of Hindustani classical.
