Although this circumflex is used for the sake of pronunciation for the vowels, for i and u there is no such actual reason, even though a part of circumflex is present, it doesn't affect any sound when its applied on i and u. it just indicates that some letter ( S) has vanished with time. read less

It does not affect the pronunciation as it does for a, e and o. example : mur and mûr will sound same.

Apparently it does not affect the pronunciation in the cases of î and û, so the French Academy decided to drop it.
