What is the difference between "clé" and "clef" in French if they both mean "key?"

French Language Tutor

Those are two alternative spellings for the same word. La clef was the popular spelling until fairly recently. It's usual to encounter it in older literature. La clé is newer and more popular today. You'll still see both, however.
