My dear friend, It's very nice to know that you are looking forward to learning French. I assure you will never regret this decision of yours. One thing that you must always remember while learning a language is that dedication towards that language which in your case is French is of the highest importance and I am pretty much sure that you have a lot of it. Secondly, you must get through all the necessary stuff like learning vocabulary and grammar. If you can do some conversation practice and make yourself comfortable with writing in French which I surely believe will develop over time, you'll never have to look back. No one can tell you how much time you might need to attain perfection. It's for you to discover and you surely will as you follow the aforesaid methods of learning and above all, believe in yourself. I wish you all the luck in the world in your endeavour. Thanks. read less

You can complete french within 6 months with good motivation to learn the language. I would say french is easy where grammar is given much importance, bit similar to English grammar. It is very vital to practice everyday lessons that are taught.

It depends mainly on motivation and the opportunities a person has for practicing what he has learned. As far as motivations goes, it relates to the reason a person is learning the French language. If the reason happens to be keen personal interest to become multilingual or proficient in the French language, quick improvement can be expected. Sometimes I see that people choose to learn French because they are leaving for a French speaking country soon and want to pick up some phrases in French so that they think they can converse with the local population well. They might be able to get in a few phrases when they go shopping or travel but the ability to speak the language fluently will be missing. That would require much more exposure to the language mainly to its grammar. Thus it can be summarised that the question how long it will take for a person to become well versed in French depends on a multitude of factors. read less
