Try varying the capicitance and measure the current put in series with l and find the maximum in phase current that flow.

Shiva, capacitors are the elements which allow you to filter flickers, so if you plt the voltage across with time grapth the max voltage range is maintained and extra is clipped off. Its unlike zener diode for voltage regulation but they are one which enable you with boundary of voltage spikes. So in real time power electronics you use capacitors for filter design. Remember every element has its D rating after which they get destroyed no no filtering/clipping afterword. read less

Capacitor giving AC signal doesn't make any sense. A charged capacitor when connected in a circuit will discharge itself, thus generating Direct Current in the circuit. An uncharged capacitor when connected to a DC circuit, having source of emf, will get charged & finally current will stop flowing through the branch where capacitor is connected. A capacitor connected in AC circuit repeatedly charges & discharges & then again gets charged in the opposite direction. It's good if this is is the answer you were looking for. If load and capacitor are connected in series, Load will receive the ac signal which is 90 degree phase shifted with respect to source. If Load and Capacitor are connected in series, AC signal applied across the same will be bypassed by capacitor and there won't be any signal across the load. read less
