Microprocessor & Microcontroller both are integrated circuits.

The microprocessor (MPU) is a controlling unit of a microcomputer. It is stored in a single integrated circuit; whereas Microcontroller(MCU) is a compact integrated circuit design to govern a specific operation in an embedded system.

The microprocessor is a set of instructions having zero status flag, bulky & large no.of instructions, mainly used in personal computers. The microprocessor is the heart of the computer.

Whereas Microcontroller is also set of instructions having no zero flags, as well as fewer instructions, mainly used in the washing machine, MP3 players Microcontroller having RAM ROM, EEPROM embedded in it.

R&D Electrical Engineer in Industry with 5 years Experience.

The microprocessor has only a processor with intricate lines which are to be connected externally with an expensive system used in computers. On the other hand, the microcontroller has all processor, RAM, ROM, I/p&o/p lines on a single chip with minimal cost used for embedded systems.

"Chemical Engineering first year student , I have experience of 1 year in all the subject" .

Microprocessor consists of the only CPU whereas microcontroller consists of CPU, memory, integrated chip all in one and microprocessor external RAM, ROM and other output devices whereas, the microcontroller uses internal memory.

Mtech holder from NITC having teaching experience in Electronics Engineering for more than 10 years.

The microcontroller has an inbuilt RAM and ROM(a permanent memory) whereas Microprocessor does not have a ROM. Hence, the microcontroller can be used as an embedded system.

civil Eng with good teaching experience ,completed M Tech & be a good teacher & guide for students.

The microprocessor is the CPU part of a microcomputer, and it is also available as a single integrated circuit. Thus acts as main components.

Microprocessor design for general purpose. They can perform a variety of task with a different machine. Whereas microcontroller design to perform a particular task, it has a pre-programmed memory unit for a specific job. It not general-purpose but task-specific.

22 years experienced and passionate teacher. helps to build a strong base to students .

The microprocessor has only a CPU inside it and all other circuits are external to the processor. But for the microcontroller, everything is embedded inside it.
Comments

The microcontroller is used for a specific task, whereas microprocessor is used for multiple jobs.

MICROCONTROLLER:1) It is the heart of Embedded system

2) In microcontroller all peripherals such as RAM ROM TIMERS/COUNTERS are all embedded (in built) under single chip. There is no need to connect externally.

3) Speed of microcontroller is high since it takes less time to form communication between all the peripherals since they all are in built under single chip.

4) Microcontrollers consumes less power since it has all components under one chip.

5) Propagation delay is minimised.

6) They are used in washing machines, mobile phones etc.\

MICROPROCESSOR:1) Microprocessor is also like the brain of system.

2) In microprocessor all the components like RAM ROM TIMERS/COUNTERS have to be interfaced externally by using buses( cables).

3) Microprocessors are comparatively slower than microcontroller since in microprocessor the components have to be interfaced externally.

4) Microprocessor consumes more power compared to microcontroller.

5) Microprocessors are used in research computers and labs
