British found out in the rebellion of 1857 that they can better rule India by divide and rule policy. They brought in many policies to create that divide like a separate electorate for Hindus and Muslims. They were consistent with the policy they wanted to divide a powerful Bengal into West Bengal and East Bengal. Still, they failed initially in dividing, but later in history, there was a divide by East Bengal becoming a part of Pakistan as East Pakistan and later Bangladesh.

They were consistent with the policy they wanted to divide a powerful Bengal into West Bengal and East Bengal.
