As plants cannot take Nitrogen directly from the air, they need it from the soil. Nitrogen fixation is the process by which nitrogen present in the air is converted into a form which can be taken up by the plants for their nutrition; This is done by microorganisms (diazotrophs) which are mainly present near or on the roots of legumes.
