The .NET framework has evolved, and Microsoft has introduced different variations to cater to various application development needs. Here are the main types of .NET frameworks: .NET Framework (Traditional): The original .NET Framework, often referred to as the "full" or "traditional" .NET Framework, was introduced by Microsoft in the early 2000s. It includes a comprehensive set of libraries and APIs for building Windows desktop applications, web applications, and web services. This framework is primarily for Windows-based development. .NET Core: .NET Core is an open-source, cross-platform framework introduced by Microsoft to address limitations in the original .NET Framework. It supports building modern, cloud-based, and cross-platform applications. .NET Core is modular, allowing developers to include only the libraries needed for an application, resulting in a smaller footprint. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. .NET 5 and Later: .NET 5 was released as the successor to .NET Core 3.1, and subsequent versions, such as .NET 6, .NET 7, and so on, continue the evolution of the unified platform. Microsoft introduced a unified platform called "One .NET" with the release of .NET 5, consolidating the capabilities of .NET Framework and .NET Core into a single framework. It supports cross-platform development. ASP.NET: ASP.NET is a web development framework that runs on top of the .NET Framework, .NET Core, and the unified .NET platform. It includes both Web Forms and MVC (Model-View-Controller) for building web applications. ASP.NET Core is the modern, cross-platform version of ASP.NET. Xamarin: Xamarin is a framework for building cross-platform mobile applications using C# and .NET. It allows developers to write code in C# and share it across iOS, Android, and Windows platforms. Xamarin applications can achieve native performance and UI experiences. Entity Framework: Entity Framework is an object-relational mapping (ORM) framework for .NET. It simplifies database interaction by allowing developers to work with databases using C# or VB.NET code rather than direct SQL queries. It supports both traditional .NET Framework and .NET Core. Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF): WPF is a UI framework for building Windows desktop applications. It allows developers to create rich, interactive user interfaces using XAML (eXtensible Application Markup Language) and supports data binding, styling, and animation. WPF applications are typically built on the .NET Framework. Windows Communication Foundation (WCF): WCF is a framework for building service-oriented applications. It enables developers to create distributed and interoperable services using various communication protocols. WCF is often used in conjunction with the traditional .NET Framework for building enterprise-level applications. Developers are encouraged to refer to the official Microsoft documentation for the latest information on .NET frameworks. read less
