Bengal was a large province with both Hindu and Muslim population.
However, in the western part, Hindu's were in the majority, and Muslims were in the minority. In contrast, in the eastern part, Muslims were in the majority, and Hindu's were in the minority.
Britishers wanted to create communal tension between Hindu's and Muslim's. Hence they opted for the partition of Bengal.
