Mobile IP is actually not dead. Right now it's somewhat implemented in large Wi-Fi networks in Schools and Bussinesses. This is so that when your phone or device connects to one of the Wi-Fi routers, it gets an DHCP lease. Now, what happens is that many networks divide their network up into subnets (or VLANs) that represent each physical location (IE. The Break Room, Classroom 104A, etc.) But that means, all the time when you walk around a campus, your phone has to get a new DHCP lease right? No, that would drain your battery in a quick hurry. Mobile IP makes it so that you can have the same Address and walk around campus hopping from AP to AP. That is, until your lease expires and the device has to get another DHCP lease as anything else does. read less
