Simple. Understand the 'why' and 'how' of everything. For example, why the area of a square with 2cm side is 4cm square? Because a square with 2cm side will contain 4 squares of 1cm each inside it. How do you make sure it is so? Draw a 2cm square first, then draw cross lines inside the square between left and right, top and bottom sides, at a distance of 1cm from the vertices. Now count the number of squares inside.
After this, you will never forget how to find the area of any shape.
