In this case you should take more comprehensive approach. whenever you need to maximise a+b+c then all the numbers has to positive(why). Now what values can x,y,z can take? for this look at the right hand side number, 16. x,y,z can't be bigger than 4 and also can't take values of roots of degree higher than 2, so values left are x,y,z= 1, ?2, ?3, 2, ?5, ?6, ?7...4. out of this rejecting 0,1 is very easy and then with combinations you can find ans. read less

Dear Malay, Whenever, you have such questions, try out with combinations, such that the equation is satisfied. In this case, if x=-2,y=-2,z=-2, And if we put values in x square+ysquare +zsquare, the answer is 16. Similarly, if x=2,y=2,z=2, then also the above equation gets satisfied. However, in the above question, we need to ensure that the value obtained by substuting x,y,z in x+2y+2z is maximum. So such a case is only possible when x=2,y=2,z=2. I.e. x+2y+2z is equal to 10. first take y= x^(root 2) then taking log both the sides log y= (root 2) log x now diff w.r.to x 1/y (dy/dx)= (root 2) 1/x so dy/dx= y (root 2/x) now by putting y's value here dy/dx= x^(root 2)* (root 2/x)
