Structural differences are ribosomal binding in RER (Granular ER) and not in SER (Agranular ER). Functional differences are RER is involved in protein synthesis whereas SER in lipid synthesis

The rough endoplasmic reticulum is continuous with both the nuclear envelope and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum has functions in several metabolic processes; it contains enzymes, and it stores calcium ions in muscle cells. Lipid synthesis takes place in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is continuous with the rough endoplasmic reticulum. read less
