Question:Santosh posted a Question in Class XI-XII Tuition (PUC) Amongst the foreign authors which books are good for chemistry? You could tell me separate books for organic, inorganic and physical chemistry or just one big book of all, any will do. Answer: I know one Peter Atkins. Apart from writing a book on Physical Chemistry, he had written a 100 (approximately) pages book on The Laws of Thermo Dynamics (quite a friendly book; however, if you are interested in all the mathematics [rigorous, as handled by the giants like Legendre (known for his contribution such as Legendre Transformation and other contributions to partial differential equations) Kelvin and Claussius], go for P V Panat's 'Thermo Dynamics and Statistical Mechanics' as it is one of the cheapest possible Indian Edition by Narosa Publishing House and yet having the standard enough to be taken in Arizona University USA. However, Narosa publications Indian editions are known for typographical mistakes, even as Professor (late) P V Panat was known to be an authentic Physics Professor both in India and abroad. If you are interested in Electronic Structure theories (Physical Chemistry), then I have not seen a book better than Modern Quantum Chemistry [Introduction to Advanced Electronic Theory] by A Szabo and N S Ostlund (used cost about Rs 900 around 2 years before, in India). This book starts right from the scratch, leaving nothing in the dark. read less
