The fact when the light bounces back, and when it falls on the surface, it is reflected in the same medium by making an angle of reflection equal to the angle of incidence. To be very simple, when light is pointed towards a smooth surface, it bounces back, it is known as a reflection of light. The light ray which lands on the surface is known to be reflected off the surface.

The opacity of objects causes a reflection of light. All objects, even ones we consider transparent such as glass reflect some of the light falling on them.

What reflection physically means is the return of energy (and momentum considering light as photons and applying conservation of momentum as in a ball striking a wall) carried in the alternating electric and magnetic fields that are mostly light back to the Medium after encountering an obstacle(provided it is not too small).

In metals, as in beacuse of the presence of free electrons, the forward radiation takes place only upto a specific depth and reflection dominates. In simple terms, Rough surfaces scatter light.  Smooth surfaces reflect it.

Hope this answers your question.

Reflection is when light bounces off an object. If the surface is smooth and shiny, like glass, water or polished metal, the light will reflect at the same angle as it hit the surface. This is called specular reflection. Diffuse reflection is when light hits an object and reflects in lots of different...

Most of the things we see are because light from a source has reflected off it. read less

When it strikes to a plane surface like mirror the angle of incidence of light and angle of reflection both are same. When a light strikes to an object and after being reflected it enters to our eyes, then only we are able to see that object. Thus, It is also an important phenomena regarding our real life. read less
