the sign of any ( object distance, image distance,focal length etc ) are taken positive if it is in the direction of incident ray else negative * all the distances are measure from the pole

in case of mirrors the signs are put according to direction of incident ray i.e negative in case of real image, inverted image while positive in case of virtual and erect image
