Carbon changes into diamond beneath the earth under high pressure and temperature. This process might have taken millions of years. Under extreme pressure and heat, the carbon atoms adopt a different bonding structure ( bonding structure you will study in higher classes if you opt science )

Most natural diamonds are formed at high temperature and pressure at depths of 140 to 190 kilometers (87 to 118 mi) in the Earth's mantle. Carbon-containing minerals provide the carbon source, and the growth occurs over periods from 1 billion to 3.3 billion years (25% to 75% of the age of the Earth). This process of changing in the phase on application of extreme temperature and extreme pressure is termed as phase transformation.So the carbon transforms its phase to tetrahedra form when extreme heat of about 2200 degrees Fahrenheit and extreme pressure is applied. Synthetic diamonds are formed nowadays by either High temperature and high pressure technique which is same as the process occurring in earth crust. But it will be having some impurities.
