0Percentage is one of the most common topics students struggle with, not because it's hard, but because they don't understand what percentage actually means. Once that clicks, everything else — profit/loss, discount, simple interest — becomes easy.
The core idea:
Percentage simply means "out of 100." So 20% means 20 out of every 100.
The one formula you need:
Percentage = (Part / Whole) × 100
Quick trick for mental maths:
To find 10% of any number, just move the decimal one place left.
Example: 10% of 250 = 25
Once you know 10%, you can find almost anything fast:
- 20% = double the 10% value
- 5% = half the 10% value
- 15% = 10% + 5%
Solved example:
A student scored 45 out of 60 in a test. What's the percentage?
→ (45/60) × 100 = 75%
Where students go wrong:
Mixing up "percentage of a number" with "percentage increase/decrease." These are different calculations, and I always spend extra time on this distinction with my students because exams love testing it.
Practice tip:
Don't memorize — practice 5 mixed problems daily (some "find %," some "% increase/decrease," some word problems) for a week. That's usually enough to make percentage a strength instead of a weak spot.
