Can an Answer Key Become a Diagnostic Tool?

Can an Answer Key Become a Diagnostic Tool?
Most answer keys tell students only one thing:
Your answer is right or wrong.
But they rarely answer a more important question:
Where did the student's thinking change?
As teachers, we often identify mistakes for our students. We circle them with a red pen, write the correct answer, and move on to the next question.
The student corrects the answer.
The notebook looks neat.
But has the learning gap disappeared?
Not always.
What if an answer key could become a diagnostic tool instead of just a correction tool?
While working on basic mathematics concepts, I have been developing a Self-Check Diagnostic Worksheet based on a simple learning cycle:
Attempt → Compare → Locate → Explain → Remember → Retry
The process is simple.
Students first solve the worksheet independently without any hints.
Only after completing the attempt do they receive the self-check sheet.
Instead of seeing only the final answer, they see:
the complete step-by-step solution,
the logic behind every step,
an opportunity to compare it with their own work,
a space to identify exactly where their thinking changed,
and finally, they write a personal learning rule for future problems.
For example, if a student writes:
−40 + 21 = −61
the worksheet does not simply say:
Correct answer = −19.
Instead, it encourages the student to ask:
Did I apply the wrong sign rule?
Did I add instead of subtract?
Did I forget which number determines the final sign?
Finally, the student writes:
"When signs are different, I subtract the absolute values and keep the sign of the number with the greater absolute value."
At that moment, the mistake becomes part of the learning process rather than something to erase.
I also believe this approach can help teachers.
Instead of knowing only which questions were wrong, teachers begin to understand why they were wrong.
Over time, repeated patterns can reveal whether a student struggles with concepts, procedures, calculation accuracy, or simply loses track while solving multi-step problems.
I am currently developing and refining this framework through mathematics worksheets, but I believe the same approach could be adapted to science, languages, and many other subjects where understanding the learning process is more valuable than simply checking the final answer.
I would love to hear from fellow educators.
Do you think students learn more effectively when they correct their answers, or when they learn to diagnose their own thinking?
