BF3, atom B has only six electrons sharing with the F atoms. So it is an electron deficient compound and so it is a lewis acid.

In Borantrifluoride boran is with vacant orbital according to Lewis theory the elements ir ions with vacant orbitals act as Lewis acids

In BF3, central atom has only six electrons after sharing with the electrons of the F atoms. It is an electron deficient compound and thus behaves as a Lewis acid.

Central atom is B

Atomic no. of B : 5

Electronic configuration of B : 1s2 2s2 2p1

Thus, for forming three bonds with three fluorine atoms, the paired electrons on 2s orbital gets excited and the ground state electronic configuration of B becomes

1s2 2s1 2p 2

still, one 2p orbital remains empty which has the tendency to accept an electron pair and thus behaves as a lewis acid.

Because Boron is 13th group element and it is trivalent.. after forming three bonds with fluorine, the total number of electrons will be 6. Therefore to complete the octet configuration, it will accept a pair of electrons. According to Lewis concept, electron pair acceptors are called Acids.. so BF3... read more
