I am an experienced PGT chemistry teacher. I can make you learn concepts in such a way that you will never forget them.

See hard water majorly containd Ca and Mg ions. And zeolites are shape selective catalyst the ion whivh would be almost similar to the size of Na+ will be removed. Thus Mg2+ and Ca2+ both can be exchanged from hard water using zeolites.

In a metallic bond, why positive ions are called kernels, not cations?
The kernel is an atom without its valence electrons that are weakly bonded; no electron belongs to one nucleus, valence electrons can move one kernel to another. So it is known as kernel, not cation (have valency).
