British people act like they own English, because they really do! Britian is nothing but England (UK) and English is the language spoken there. It's the native language of British people.

Because they did. English comes from Britain, or what was originally the British Empire. It has evolved over centuries, but it remained in the region we recognise as the United Kingdom today. It spread to other parts of the world after British colonisation. Today, other countries have their own versions of English, with their own dialects and accents. But the language traces its root to Britain. However, over such a long period of time, the language has pretty much become our own now. We can't separate ourselves from English anymore. It's as much ours as anybody else's. read less
