English is just a language out of the thousands in the world. If it would not have existed, the world would not have stopped working. Then probably some other language would have been considered as the global language.

If English did not exist, there would definitely be a dearth of one common global language throughout the world, and various other languages would have gotten a chance to rule the world with their widespread use.

The relevance of English as we know it was not guaranteed, even if one ignores the fact that the Germanic tribes that lived in the country that would later bear their name (England) would have developed a language that was a fusion of Saxon and Romano-British. When the Dutch were at the height of their power in the 16th and 17th centuries, English was discarded as a minor Germanic dialect. Because of British imperial dominance over the Dutch, we speak English. Logically, a Dutch dialect might have been as prevalent as English is now if the Dutch had maintained their control over international trade (and kept hold of "New Amsterdam aka New York). read less
