Summary 

Class 10 English First Flight, P7 – Animals is written by the American poet Walt Whitman. It offers an insight into the poet’s belief that animals are better than human beings. The poet states that animals are far better as they don’t have evil lurking in their minds. They are not controlled by the sins of greed, jealousy against each other; and do not keep complaining about miseries and sorrows which they have to face in their daily lives. They do not keep running behind items of worldly pleasure or achievements like humans. The poet also mentions that they do not boast of the good deeds that they have done in the name of service to God or to gain popularity among fellow humans. The animals are truthful and not deceptive. Even the predators are truthful in their intent to use other animals as food and are not deceptive like humans. He wonders how the qualities which were present in humans have transferred on to the animals. Did he, (introspecting- a Human) lose the “tokens” or qualities like kindness, innocence, generosity etc.  and leave them somewhere on the path of civilization for the want of worldly materialistic requirements?

Animals Class 10 Analysis

The poet wants to turn away from the life of living with human beings. He is of the opinion that animals are more self-contained and placid than human beings.

The protagonist explains that Humans cry and complain over misery and sorrow which everyone has to face in life. They are obsessed with materialistic Owings and achievements and also pray to God and worry about their wrong-doings. They worship and kneel, out of fear, to other humans who lived thousands of years ago; they are worshipped in the form of Saint, Patron, Preacher of God.

The tokens to which the poet refers, are the qualities that made a human stand out from the rest of the animal kingdom. In the materialistic world race to achieve the objects of their desire – the poet feels that they have lost the good qualities/virtues of Generosity, Kindness, Humanity.
