At first, printed books looked similar with the handwritten manuscripts. In fact, the metal letters imitated the ornamental handwritten styles. The three characteristic features ofprinted books were (i) In these books, borders were illuminated by hand with foliage and other different patterns. Illustrations in these books were painted. (ii)The books printed for the rich, some spaces were kept blank. Again each purchase had the right to select the design and decide the particular painting school that would do the illustration.
