Learn Refraction by spherical lenses

Through the Lens

Welcome to the fascinating world of optics! In the CBSE Class 10 Science chapter "Light – Reflection and Refraction," one of the most critical concepts you will explore is refraction by spherical lenses. Have you ever wondered how a magnifying glass makes letters appear larger or how spectacles help correct a person's vision? This amazing phenomenon happens because of refraction—the bending of light as it passes from one transparent medium, like air, into another medium of a different density, like glass. Spherical lenses are essentially solid pieces of transparent material bound by two surfaces, where at least one of these surfaces is spherically curved.

To master this concept, you must understand the two primary types of spherical lenses and the core mathematical logic governing them. A convex lens is thicker at its center and tapers at the edges, designed to converge incoming light rays. Conversely, a concave lens is thinner at the center and thicker at the edges, causing incoming light rays to diverge or spread outward. The core logic of image formation relies on the Lens Formula, mathematically expressed as 1/f = 1/v - 1/u. In this formula, u represents the object distance, v is the image distance, and f is the focal length. The exact point on the principal axis where parallel light rays perfectly converge (or appear to diverge from) is called the principal focus (F), while the geometric center of the lens is known as its optical centre (O).

Refraction by Spherical Lenses Convex Lens (Converging) Concave Lens (Diverging) O F (Focus) O Virtual F

Take a close look at the detailed optical diagram above, which provides a clear, step-by-step visual of how light behaves when interacting with both types of lenses. On the left side, you observe parallel incoming light rays (in orange) hitting the boundary of the convex lens. Notice how the lens bends these green refracted rays inward until they all intersect perfectly at a single point on the right side—this real meeting point is the principal focus (F). On the right side of the diagram, the concave lens acts entirely differently. When parallel orange rays strike it, the green refracted rays are pushed outward, spreading away from each other. Because these rays never physically meet, we mathematically trace them backward using dotted lines to find where they appear to originate. This creates a "Virtual Focus" located on the same side as the incoming light. Understanding these ray paths is absolutely essential because your CBSE Class 10 board exams will frequently test your ability to independently draw accurate ray diagrams to predict the nature, position, and relative size of an image.

Grasping the intricate rules of ray diagrams, mastering cartesian sign conventions, and calculating numerical problems using the lens formula can sometimes feel overwhelming for students. If you find yourself struggling to understand the mathematics behind refraction, seeking the right guidance can elevate your confidence and your scores.
