The amount of work that we do to move a unit positive charge from one point to another is the potential difference between these two points. It unit is Volt. One volt is the amount of potential difference between two points when one joule of work is done to move one columb of charge from one point to another point.

When an unit quantity of electricity is transferred from one point to another point then some energy release during the transferring process. After this process difference in potential between both the points is called potential difference.
And this difference represents the work done or energy released during the process.
