We use an whenever next word is a vowel and singular. Eg: That is an elephant. Similarly a is used to represent a singular word whose starting letter is not vowel. Eg: We played with a ball.

Both 'a' and an represents singular in front of noun. whenever vowels comes use 'an' instead of 'a'
