That is a poor assumption: the implementation of the iterator is opaque. It could be an index, a pointer, or something even more obscure like a pair containing a pointer and offset. The only operations guaranteed by an iterator is that it can be pre-incremented and dereferenced.(Other categories of iterator offer more operations, but you have to use type analysis to verify their availability.) The value of an iterator is undefined. read less
