Pointer is a variable which store the address location. FILE is defined data type. Any type of operation with the file like opening, closing and reading are done with the file pointer. For example, the general format for declaring and opening a file. FILE *fp; fp=fopen("filename", "mode"); here the variable fp is pointer to the data type FILE. The second statment open the file with the specified name and assign an identifier to the FILE type pointer fp. The file pointer fp, which contains all the infrmation about the file is subseqently used as communication link btn the system and the program. read less
