Is it a good practice to have a C++ application running as a child process waiting for inputs from a Node main process to perform heavy calculations?

No, not if you look at it in terms of computation overhead. If the calculation is heavy and can be made independent, it should be made independent. Main processes generally have a time allocation algorithm that allocates CPU time to each child process and similarly CPU uses time allocation techniques to allocate time to all the main processes. Hence, making a heavy calculation wait will delay it exponentially and other programs waiting for output from this process will also be inevitably delayed. read less
