Can GCC (or another compiler) inline or optimize a function call mistakenly and generate a program that produces wrong results?

Nope not possible since all the compilers are well tested. So, definitely the wrong results could be because of some logic error or a bug that is implicit in nature. Check for things in your program that makes your program does anything implicitly, thats the most prominent cause of such behavior.
