Is it mandatory to have in-depth/medium-level knowledge in coding before learning azure data engineer? bigdata (apache tools) or cloud data engineer, which one has more scope in future? Do data engineers have to write complex queries like full-time developers?

It certainly give you benefit. But path is long & not so easy. It dons't mean too long or tough. Take around 6 months of exhaustive learning. You also need to learn some related applications/system for execution.
