Bengal was the most prominent state at that time having a very high population. To weaken the ongoing national movement, Curzon Implemented DIVIDE AND RULE POLICY, a brainchild of the roman empire, though this idea was already proposed before Curzon. To create a rift between Hindu Muslim Curzon, divide the east Muslim-dominated area from the west Hindu majority. The explanation given by the Britishers was the state's size, which wasn't the primary intent behind the partition. The Main motive would have been to suppress the ongoing national movement and stem the rising nationalism in Bengal.
Capturing Wealth From The Ganges And Showering it to the Thames was also a motive which was quite evident as the Britishers looted a lot of wealth.
