Living being or animate means that can move, grow, develop, show a life cycle that is supported by various physiological activities like respiration, growth & development, nutrition, reproduction and senescence(death). But its race (species) continues to exist as it can multiply. All living beings whether motile or sedentary do exhibit all the above activities, and they always react to any stimuli either positively or negatively with the help of biochemical processes involved in the sustenance of what is called life!
This phenomenon is what makes it different from inanimate or non -living things through chemical reactions occur but do not exhibit any of the other properties presented by living systems.
But both interchange energy and matter as an open system.
